What do you do when someone steals your amazing idea

What do you do when someone steals your amazing ideaWhat do you do when someone steals your amazing ideaThe subject line read did you see this? The message welches from my editor Jen. Nir, I saw the headline on this story and thought it might be written by you- but no she wrote. Very weird. I instantly clicked on the link shed sent.It was uncanny An article written by Christopher Mele at the New York Times, freakishly similar to a post Id written but hadnt yet published. My first thought was that Id accidentally tweeted a link to my draft or published my post by mistake. It was as if someone had hacked into my computer or read my mind. Meles article used the same examples, cited the same research, and even linked to the same sources. I was so surprised, I sent Mele an email (though Id never been in contact with him before), asking if hed somehow read my draft.Meanwhile, I rushed to post what Id been working on, figuring this would at least prove Id been writing well before Meles story appeared. Just then, Mele responded to my email saying hed never heard of my work.Of course, he hadnt. And upon further reflection, I felt pretty foolish. Who was I proving anything to? Who really cared?Id gotten so worked up, fearing someone had copied my ideas, that I let paranoia get the best of me. Id fallen into a cognitive trap. The sign of a novicePeople tend to believe ideas are rare things, gems to be collected and hoarded. But in fact the nature of creative work, be it corporate innovation, academic research, or artistic endeavor, tells us quite the opposite - that if a useful insight pops into your head, its fruchtwein likely in other peoples minds as well.Where I live, in Silicon Valley, theres one sure clue when people are newbies to the tech community they ask me to keep their ideas secret. Some entrepreneurs ask me to sign a non-disclosure agreement, an easy tell they havent been here long. With rare exceptions, few industry veterans sign NDAs for the simple fact tha t good ideas tend to come to different people around the same time. Its called the multiple discovery theory, which, contrary to the heroic theory of invention, posits that discoveries are most often made by multiple people, not by lone geniuses. History is littered with examples the formulation of calculus, the discovery of vitamin A, the development of the telephone, the light bulb, the jet engine, the atom bomb. When the time is ripe for certain things, the mathematician Farkas Bolyai said, these things appear in different places in the manner of violets coming to light in early spring. In many ways, discoveries are inevitable, since innovation occurs as a result of the prevailing environment as much as it does via the inspiration of a prepared mind. As Kevin Kelly explains in his book What Technology Wants, Each technological progression around the world follows a remarkably similar approximate order. Stone flakes yield to control of fire, then to cleavers and ball weapons. The se quence is fairly uniform. Knifepoints always follow fire, menschenfreundlich burials always follow knifepoints, and the arch precedes welding. Each previous generation lays the latticework for the next discovery, unearthing insights we are bound to discover. In a world of inevitable simultaneous discoveries, there is no point to keeping most things secret. In fact, holding ideas close to ones vest comes with unforeseen costs. For example, not sharing your insights frequently and widely means missing out on feedback. Most of the bad startup ideas I hear are bad not because theyre under threat of someones stealing the idea, but because the founder doesnt know what he or she doesnt know.Sharing ideas means other people can show you your blind spots. Furthermore, overvaluing ideas makes us more likely to hold on to them, which in turn makes us more rigid to new and potentially contradictory evidence that might tell us to go in a different direction. Finally, idea fetishization blinds us to whats really important - actually doing something useful with the idea Ideas are easy, execution is hard. The law of trivialityThe British author C. Northcote Parkinson is famed for his law of triviality, first elucidated in a satirical article published in 1957. Parkinson writes of a committee assembled to approve plans for a nuclear power plant that instead spends most of its time arguing about a bike shed. The fictional committee wastes so much time on the bike shed because people are more likely to have an opinion on things they understand. While few feel qualified to speak about nuclear power, everyone can put in their two cents about a bike shed.Triviality exerts its power in other ways. We have all, at one point or another felt wronged by someone who has taken something from us. Like a child who breaks down crying after another kid swipes his crayon, we reflexively react, sometimes with strong emotion, before recognizing the triviality of the situation.Perhaps the most vici ous childlike reactions come from thought leaders. Whereas business results can be measured with money, credit for ideas as property is harder to quantify, and the fight for that credit can bring out the worst in people. Ive lost count of the times Ive heard someone disparage an academic or an industry colleague as a hack, a charlatan, or an idea thief. As the political scientist, Wallace Sayre has been credited as saying, In any dispute, the intensity of feeling is inversely proportional to the value of the issues at stake. Hence, we argue most about the things that matter least. When it came to my essay, I realized Id gotten worked up over nothing. My response looked even more ridiculous if you consider that both Mele (the New York Times author) and I cited other peoples ideas to make our points.I should have been pleased that Id written something a publication like the New York Times also thought was important. When I checked Twitter after publishing my post, I noticed a kind twee t from Mele nireyal Very cool blog and post today. Sorry, you got scooped but does not diminish the information you conveyed. In life, there are plenty of crayons to color with. The wise child happily finds new ways to create something original. This column first appeared at Nir and Far.

How to Get Out of a Work Rut - The Muse

How to Get Out of a Work Rut - The MuseHow to Get Out of a Work Rut Have you ever had a day when things felt off? Maybe you continually lost focus, had an utter lack of motivation, or simply couldnt rally to get anything done. Weve all had unproductive days here and there, but occasionally, behauptung slumps can span days, weeks, or even months. A single bad day is one thing, but a lingering work rut can be detrimental to your happiness, wellbeing, and career success. When youre in a slump, you dont produce your best work and may become disengaged from the tasks that used to excite you. Its possible that no one at work has bedrngnisiced a change. But what if they have? You might be worried that your babo will pick up on your low productivity, and it will negatively impact your next evaluation. You know youre not performing as well as you should, which only makes you more self-conscious and perpetuates the cycle of feeling down. When youre stuck in a work rut, ignoring the problem and trying to simply push through isnt the solution. Addressing the situation head-on can provide important insight into how to avoid a similar situation in the future. Here are four things you can do to begin bouncing back from your work rut- no matter how long youve been stuck in it.1. Self-EvaluateTake some time to think about what got you into this rut in the first place. Try to pinpoint when you first abfluged feeling off, and consider what may have triggered the change. That means examining your life outside of the office as well its possible that it may not be a professional matter thats bringing you down. Are you behind on your rent or butting heads with a difficult mother-in-law? The worries and stresses of these personal issues can follow you to the office. On the other hand, the culprit could be your job. Not every work atmosphere is encouraging and supportive. Are you constantly criticized or underappreciated at the office? Toxic environments can be a major source of frustra tion and can leave you feeling drained. As youre sorting through what may have triggered your work slump, assess whether youre responding to emotional or physical depletion. Getting physically worn down from working overtime six weeks in a row, for example, is significantly different than the emotional exhaustion of caring for a sick child at home. If your rut is related to fatigue from overexerting yourself, realize that youre feeling a normal physical response. Your body naturally downcycles after intense periods of high activity. Allowing yourself some time to rest and recover may be all that you need- but you can also boost your energy by getting more sleep, making healthier eating decisions, and setting aside time to recharge every day.Emotional exhaustion, on the other hand, may require a different, more complex approach, such as processing through your feelings with a close friend or therapist. 2. Plan a Mini RetreatIt can be easy to lose sight of the inspiration that once mot ivated you if youre mired in busywork and the daily ins and outs of your job. Without a sense of purpose, youre more likely to feel down and shuffle aimlessly through your workday. In short, youve lost sight of what drives you. When this happens, try planning a mini retreat for yourself. Take a day or two to refocus. You dont have to travel anywhere simply dedicate intentional time to exploring your purpose. You can do this by asking yourself big questions like What would I be doing if money wasnt a problem? or When do I feel most alive? Whether you recognize your intention to move up the ranks within your current company or start your own business one day, define your why and commit to making it a priority. Dont let a little bump in the road derail your ambition. 3. Focus on One Thing at a TimeYouve got emails to respond to, an interview to plan, a financial report to write, and your boss just asked you to create an ad for a new campaign- and youre stuck in the weekly staff meeting while none of it is getting done. Your mind is racing through your task list. You sneak a peek at your phone and maybe even shoot off an email or two- while haphazardly keeping one ear turned in to the meeting.Trying to juggle too many balls at once can have a paralyzing effect that results in inaction and triggers a cycle of negative self-evaluation- meaning that despite your best efforts to accomplish everything, you continue to fall further behind, which leads to feelings of inadequacy, which decrease your productivity further. Humans possess an innate, psychological drive for mastery. Completing tasks satisfies that need and propels you forward. With this in mind, you can reestablish momentum by regaining your focus. Get just one task done, then move on to the next. Create a prioritized to-do list and work through it systematically. This will nurture your feelings of mastery and create a positive feedback loop instead of a negative one, allowing you to lift yourself out of your productivity slump. 4. Identify the Decision Youve Been AvoidingUnshakable work slumps tend to crop up when the tactics you used in the past to produce successful results are no longer effective. For example, maybe you used to gain validation by always saying yes to additional work, but that no longer elicits praise from your boss.Or, maybe you used to vent to a co-worker as a coping mechanism, but it doesnt relieve your stress the way it used to. What worked before simply doesnt work anymore.Ruts of this kind always come back to a decision you need to make, but have been putting off. You might be avoiding firing difficult employee who keeps making big mistakes, or, if youre really unhappy, you may be dodging the fact that its time to look for a new job.Evading the issue, however, will not make it go away. To overcome this slump, you have to identify the decision youve been avoiding and act, despite the discomfort. Confronting the decision will not only resolve the issue youve been fretting over, but will also allow you to begin moving past your rut.No matter what the cause of your stagnation is, you are capable of rising above it. Take the time you need to evaluate why you found yourself in the situation to begin with, use your goals to rekindle motivation, train yourself to focus, and identify the decision youve been avoiding so you can act. Taking these steps will help you recover from your slump and get you back to performing like the spectacular professional you are. Photo of person going running courtesy of Shutterstock.

How to evaluate the quality of trust on your team

How to evaluate the quality of trust on your gruppeHow to evaluate the quality of trust on your kollektivI really dont reach out to any of my colleagues when Im struggling with a problem, Alex confessed. Im the only woman at this level in the company and welches chosen for this sttte over two men who were once my peers. Im not about to ask for help and risk looking like I dont know what Im doing.Alex is one of three senior leaders who recently joined the executive gruppe of a service organization. Team dynamics have not been the best since the CEO expanded the group composition. Episodes of friction and infighting between new and tenured members of the team has become routine, the effects of which are being felt by those lower in the organization. Like Alex, other members of the team werent reaching out to one another for input or advice because of fear of being judged harshly for doing so.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivi ty, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWhen I spoke with the CEO, it was clear that little had been done to truly integrate the team after it was expanded. Because the company was growing so rapidly, everyone was busy with their own divisional priorities, and the new team members got swept up in the flow.I think the last time I went to lunch with anyone was two years ago, said Andrew, the CFO. Most of us eat at our desks, or during a meeting. Theres no real time for leisurely chats with the guy sitting in the office next door. The culture in this company was like many Ive seen. Run fast, chase growth or jog in place if you have to - but whatever you do, dont stop moving. The result is often great for the bottom line initially, but returns wane as team dynamics strain under the relentless pace. Thats where trust-building among team members becomes so important. The same behaviors that build trust also help the team to manage rapid change, which is why healthy trust levels on your team are so essential. Like trust, vulnerability is required to develop comfort with the ambiguity thats so characteristic of change. Similarly, building trust and navigating change both require persistence. Leveraging change also requires the same understanding necessary for establishing trust on a team - a certainty that what the team can do together far outweighs what any one member could accomplish alone. If you want to evaluate trust on the team you lead, pay attention to these four networks of team interaction where trust is crucial for successCompetence Network Do your team members view each other as competent leaders who have the skills required to help the team succeed? Are they confident that their colleagues can be counted on to deliver and meet deadlines? Belief in a colleagues competence strengthens overall trust within that relationship, so its important for team members to understand the background, experiences and competencies each person brings to the team.Integrit y Network Do team members trust that they can share private or confidential information with one another and have that confidentiality respected? When team members are willing to share when they are struggling, as well as support each other through difficult personal or professional challenges, its a good sign that this interaction network is healthy.Informal Communications Network Beyond formal, role-specific interactions, are members of your team seeking out their colleagues? Do they take time from their day to walk around and chat with one another and with employees to get a sense of whats happening in the culture? Do they socialize at work or during the evenings or weekends? Healthy levels of informal communication can improve team trust and strengthen confidence among colleagues that their team mates can be counted on to keep them in the loop.Advice Network When team trust is at its highest colleagues are vulnerable enough to solicit advice from one another while working throug h a difficult professional issue, or when they want to gain another persons perspective about a decision they are contemplating. Team members value each others experience and know that when advice is solicited, it will be offered without their competence being questioned. Are team members seeking advice from someone other than you?Demonstrating trust and developing high-quality team networks begins at the top, so as leader you must model the behaviors you want to see replicated. When your team has earned your trust thats easy to do. But, whats more important to ask is if you have earned theirs. This article originally appeared on SmartBrief.
